Umut Kazancı and Emrah Kazancı were beaten by the police officers with the buts of their rifles on the grounds that they did not give way to the armoured police vehicle inYüksekova District of Hakkâri Province on 2 September 2010. İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13 went on hearing the case against the Democratic Society Party’s (DTP) Diyarbakır former deputy Aysel Tuğluk in connection with five different articles of her which were published in Yeniden Özgür Gündem and Özgür Politika Newspapers in 2003 and 2004 on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law on 2 September 2010. The court adjudicated to bring Aysel Tuğluk to the next hearing by force on the grounds that Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 12 could not get her legal argument and adjourned the hearing to 30 November 2010 (t24.com.tr, 2 September).

The trial against the executives of the Kurdish Günlük Newspaper, Filiz Koçali and Ramazan Pekgöz, is about to reach its final stage. The journalists are tried on the grounds that an interview with Murat Karayılan, head of the Steering Council of the Democratic Confederation of Kurdistan (KCK), the umbrella organizations that includes the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The case was continued at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13 on Thursday (2 September). Lawyer Özcan Kılıç presented the defence for Koçali and Pekgöz, who did not attend the hearing. He said that the interview published in the newspaper has to be accounted for as part of the public's right to access information on different ideas.

The case prosecutor had previously presented his final plead and demanded the punishment of the defendants according to “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law. Prosecutor Hüseyin Ayar reiterated the same request in Thursday's hearing. Pekgöz and Koçali are facing imprisonment of up to 7.5 years.

Defence lawyer Kılıç referred to Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights which guarantees the right to hold and express opinions including the people's right to be informed. Kılıç requested the acquittal of his clients. Günlük Newspaper owner Ziya Çiçekçi is tried in the scope of the same case. President Judge Ömer Diken postponed the trial to 23 November. In the issues dated 7, 8 and 9 August 2009, the Kurdish Günlük Newspaper had published the interview in three different sections entitled "We did what Hasan Cemal wanted", "I completely agree with Yaşar Kemal" and "If the state would take one step we would take two". On the basis of the interview the public chief prosecutor's office pressed charges of "spreading PKK propaganda" (bianet.org, 2 September).

Osman Kezlere (50) who had been in Maltepe (İstanbul) L Type Closed Prison since 25 September 2008 and became a cancer patient in prison was hospitalised to Süreyya Paşa Hospital for his treatment with the attempts of Human Rights Association’s (HRA/IHD) İstanbul Branch. Osman Kezlere was put into the convict’s room in the hospital and two soldiers were constantly with him to prevent his run away (ANF, 1 September).

On 27 August 2010 Hakkari Heavy Penal Court decided to close the case against village guards, high ranking soldiers and confessors known as the Yüksekova gang who had been charged with murder, blackmail, smuggling of drugs and arms because of lapse of time. <br>
The gang had been discovered after the detention of businessman Abdullah Canan in Hakkâri, Yüksekova district on 17 January 1996 and his subsequent death under torture and the kidnapping of businessman Necip Baskın on 21 September 1996. Four court cases had been initiated.
Only the confessor Kahraman Bilgiç had been sentenced to eight years' imprisonment (ANF, 27 August; Milliyet, 29 August).

On 30 August 2010 a private security officer was beaten by police officers at the metrobus station in Zincirlikuyu (Istanbul) for an unknown reason. The scene was film by a passenger showing that one police officer tried to use his gun (Star, 30 August).

On 29 August 2010 information was received that Alpan Yanku imprisoned in Osmaniye M-type Prison has problems with his ears, but does not receive treatment. On 28 August 2010 Istanbul Heavy Penal Court 11 ordered a one month's ban on publication for the Kurdish daily Rojev that had been issued after the stop of publication of the newspaper Azadiya Welat on the grounds that 36th edition of 28 August 2010 included an article on the front page that contained propaganda for an illegal organization. <br>
The court also ordered the confiscation of the 36th edition of Rojev according to Article 25/2 of Press Law 5187 (ANF, 28 August).

On 27 August 2010 the trial against Suzan Zengin, working in the Kartal office of the newspaper İşçi Köylü (Worker Peasant) who had been arrested on 28 August 2009 on charges of being a member of an illegal organization. <br>
During the hearing at Beşiktaş Hevay Penal Court 10 the testimony of Suzan Zengin was taken. The court ruled that if Suzan Zengin would be released she might destroy evidence and prolonged the arrest warrant. The hearing was adjourned to 15 February 2011 (atilim.org, 27 August).

On 27 August 2010 the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) organized a demonstration in Sur district (Diyarbakır) asking for a boycott of the referendum. Police officers intervened with arms so that Cembeli Erdem (50) was seriously wounded to his back. Reportedly Cembeli Erdem will be paralysed (Evrensel, 30 August).

On 25 August 2010 the police raided the Workers' Culture House in Mamak district (Ankara) and detained seven members of the Independent Revolutionary Class Platform (BDSP). On 29 August 2010 for of them were put in pre-trial detention (atilim.org, 29 August).

Of the seven people that were detained during the funeral in Ağrı, Doğubayazıt district of the militant Şeyma Yılmaz who had lost her life in a clash in the rural areas of Hakkâri, Şemdinli district on the grounds that they made propaganda for an illegal organization five were arrsted on 28 August 2010 (Zaman, 28 August).

Of the five people that were detained in Hakkari on 25 August 2010 on charges of being members of Koma Ciwaken Kurdistan (Union of Kurdish Communities) KCK/TM (Turkey Assembly) Lokman Özdemir, chair of the trade union of theological staff and Bülent Armut, member of Hakkari municipality parliament were arrsted on 29 August 2010 (Günlük, 30 August).
