5-7 January

(01/17) Human Rights Violations after the changes in the Law on Duties and Authority of Police...
On 5 January a police team was sent to Hasircilar Quarter in Adapazari due to a burglar denouncement. The police officers M.E. and H.Ö., had made a "stop" warning to I.T. who was running away then fired their handguns. I.T. was wounded due to police fire and his health is in critical condition. The police officer H.Ö. was released by the court to be tried without arrest (Radikal, 7 January).

(01/18) Explosion in Malatya...
On 4 January two people were wounded due to a sound bomb explosion in a shop in Malatya (ntvmsnbc.com, 5 January).

(01/19) Case against commemoration...
Tunceli Chief Public Prosecution Office launched a case against three people who organized a commemoration in Tunceli on 6 May 2007, on the anniversary of the execution of death penalties of Deniz Gezmis and his two friends on charges of "praising crime and criminal" (Evrensel, 5 January).

(01/20) Sentenced Publisher...
On 4January Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 9 sentenced ex-owner of Aram Publication, Fatih Tas, to 5 months' of imprisonment and a fine of 285 YTL in connection with the publication of a book named Kirbasi Raid: The Birth Night of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKKKurdish Workers' Party ) [Kirbasi Baskini: PKK'nin Doğum Gecesi] on charges of "making propaganda" under Article 7/2 Law to Fight Terrorism (Law 3713).
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 14 ex-owner of Aram Publication Fatih Tas to 20 months' of imprisonment and a fine of 8 YTL in connection with the publication of two book named 33 Days in the Flood [Tufan'da 33 Gün] and The Language of Life on Mountains [Daglarda Yasam Dili] on charges of "making propaganda" under Article 7/2 Law to Fight Terrorism (Law 3713) (ANF, 5 January).

(01/21) Hold of Publication...
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 11 setenced Societal Democracy Newspaper [Toplumsal Demokrasi Gazetesi] with hold of publication for one month and confiscation of all the printed issues in connection with two articles published on the issue of 5-11 January on charges of "making propaganda" under Article 7/2 Law to Fight Terrorism (Law 3713) (Gündem, 5 January).

(01/22) Detentions and Arrests...
Igdir Penal Court of Peace arrested three people who were monitoring a trial in Igdir on charges of "making the propaganda of an illegal organization" on 4 January (Gündem, 6 January).

(01/23)Case against Editor...
Gaziantep Chief Public Prosecution Office launched a case against the editor of Shepherd's Fire Newspaper [Çoban Atesi Gazetesi] in connection with an article named "Mother don not send me to army" written by Yasin Yetisgen under the Articles 1/1 and 2/1 Law on Crimes against Ataturk and Articles 318/1-2, 53 and 54 TPCTurkish Penal Code . The trial will begin on 8 May 2008 in Gaziantep Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 (Çoban Atesi, 6 January).

8 January

(01/024) Explosion in Diyarbakir...
A student, who was wounded with the explosion in Diyarbakir on 3 January, was death in the morning of 8 January (cnnturk.com, 8 January).

(01/025) Local Newspapers sentenced to fine...
Malatya Chief Public Prosecution Office sentenced 8 local newspaper to a fine of 2000 YTL in connection with news about the incident in Zirve Publication in Malatya on charges of "opposition against the law of media and effecting courts". Three Christians were killed in the office of Zirve Publication on 18 April 2007 (atilim.org, 7 January).

(01/026) Investigation against Children's Choir...
Diyarbakir Chief Public Prosecution Office launched an investigation against the children's choir in conncetion with World Music Festival in USA on 3 October 2007. A prosecutor took the testimonies of the children on 7 January (ntvmsnbc.com, 7 January). (01/027) Detentions and Arrests...
On 7 January A.D. was arrested in Isiklar Village of Manavgat District of Antalya Province on charges of making the internet sites of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Roj TV and some municipalities in Southeast of Turkey (Sabah, 8 January).
On 7 January 21 students were detained in home raids in connection with the explosion in Diyarbakir on 3 January (TİHV, 7 January).
12 of the 93 people who were detained in operations in Konya, Mersin, Diyarbakir, Van, Istanbul and Kocaeli were arrested on charges of "being a member of an illegal organization (Hizbullah-an Islamist right-wing group)" (cnnturk.com, 8 January).

9 January

(01/028) Human Rights Violations after the changes in the Law on Duties and Authority of Police...
On 8 January in Bornova District of Izmir Province, two civil police officers and Hasan Köse (36) began to quarrel because civil police officers did not want to show their identity card to Köse. The police officer C.U. claimed to fired his handgun aiming to air and Köse was wounded with police fire and sent to hospital (Milliyet, 9 January).

(01/029) Explosion in Diyarbakir...
A person named E.P. was detained as the primary suspect of the bombing in Diyarbakir on 3 January. He has been interrogated in Diyarbakir Security Directorate (bianet.org, 8 January).

(01/030) Right-wingers Attacked on University Students...
A right-wing group kidnapped and beaten two Kurdish students of Afyon Kocatepe University. Students were taken to hospital and they got a health report indicating disability for service for one month. Ten of the attackers were detained and 7 of them were released later. Police continue to seek the other five attackers (atilim.org, 8 January).

(01/031) Sentenced Party Executives...
Van Heavy Penal Court No. 4 sentenced Democratic Society Party's (DTP) Yüksekova District of Hakkari Province ex-chairperson Bedirhan Alkan to ten months' of imprisonment and a fine of 500YTL in connection with his words in a public statement on 11 February 2007 on charges of "praising crime and criminal" under Article 215 TPC. He said in the statement "Honourable Öcalan brought to Turkey with an international plot" (Gündem, 8 January).

(01/032) Detentions and Arrests...
22 people, including DTP's Sirnak chairperson and his daughter, a journalist of Gündem Newspaper, members of municipality council and workers of municipality, were detained in Sirnak and its districts in synchronized operations on charges of "helping and harbouring a terror organization" on 7 January. With the demand of Sinak Chief Public Prosecution Office, Sirnak Heavy Penal Court took secrecy decision (Evrensel, 9 January; Gündem, 8 January).
Ten people were detained in Ankara on charges of attending to the commemoration of Kevser Mizrak near her grave on 8 January (halkinsesi.tv, 8 January).

10 January

(01/033) Attacks on Police...
On 9 January in Kızılcahamam District of Ankara a gun fire was opened from a car just after the police's "stop" warning. 1 police officer was killed and an other one was wounded (Milliyet, 10 January).

(01/034) Right-wingers Attacked on University Students...
Three people were arrested in connection with kiddnapping and beating incident of two Kurdish students of Afyon Kocatepe University on 7 January. Police continue to seek the other five attackers (Gündem, 9 January).

8 people were detained in connection with the explosion in Diyarbakir on 3 January (ntvmsnbc.com, 9 January).

(01/036) Detentions and Arrests...
On 5 January Ankara Penal Court Peace No. 12 released the 20 people who were detained on 4 January in connection with the protest of increase in the fees of public transportation on charges of “deprivation personal freedoms” and “resisting to security forces”. Some of the defendants mentioned that they faced with ill-treatment as they were detained (TİHV, 10 January)

11 January

(01/037) Explosion in Diyarbakir...
Diyarbakir Chief Public Prosecution Office decided to delete the images of security cameras which had recorded the bombing incident on 3 January. A copy of the images will be kept in the investigation folder as evidences (ANF, 10 January).
On 10 January people of Diyarbakir and several Civil Society Organisations beside HRFTHuman Rights Foundation of Turkey protested the bombing on 3 January with a "silent march" (bianet.org, 10 January)

(01/038) Detentions and Arrests...
On 10 January Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 11 decided to arrest 4 of the 20 people who were detained in operations on 7 January on charges of "being a member of an illegal organisation" under Article 314 TPC (Gündem, 10 January).
Ten students were detained in Elazig in connection with setting fire a public bus On 10 January (Gündem, 10 January).

(01/039) Coercion and Violence against Primary School Students...
Yaladagi Governership launched an investigation about the security camera which was placed in the dormitory of Hatay Yayladagi Boarding Primary School. Authorities confirmed the incident. Cameras were removed and the recorded images were deleted (ntvmsnbc.com, 11 January).
On 10 January in IMKB Regional Boarding Primary School in Seferihisar District of Izmir Province 5 students of 5th grade were beaten by their teacher with iron stick a teacher. Students were treated in hospital. Judicial and administrative investigations were launched against the teacher. The teacher confirmed the incident but she claimed that she had beaten the students only with her hand (Zaman, 11 January).
