1-2 January

(01/001) Detentions and Arrests...
11 of the 17 people who were detained by Anti-terror Teams of Siirt Security Directorate in home raids were arrested on charges of "being a member of an illegal organization" and were put into Siirt E Type Prison on 30 December.
Five people, who were detained by Anti-terror Teams of Mersin Security Directorate in home raids on 25 December, were arrested on charges of "being a member of an illegal organization" and were put into Mersin E Type Prison on 30 December,.
Agri Penal Court of Peace arrested two students of Atatürk University who were detained in home raids in Agri on 30 December on charges of "being a member of an illegal organization" (yeniozgurpolitika.com, 31 December)
Two people were detained in Baskale District of Van in connection with distributed bills against cross border operations on 1 January (Gündem, 1 January).

(01/002) Sentenced ex-deputy of Democracy Party...
Eskisehir Penal Court of Peace No. 3 sentenced Selim Sadak, ex-deputy of Democracy Party, in connection with his speech he made on 17 February 2007 in Eskisehir Commerce Chamber on charges of "praising a crime and criminals" under Article 215/1 of the Turkish Penal Code. Sadak said "honourable Öcalan" in his speech (ANF, 31 December)

(01/003) Confiscated Calendar of Culture Centre...
Siirt Penal Court of Peace confiscated 2008 calendar of Mesopotamia Culture Centre (MKMMesopotamian Culture Centre ) on charges of "making propaganda of illegal organization" under Article 25 of Press Code the on 28 December (Evrensel, 1 January).

(01/004) Attack on Association Building...
On 31 December unidentified people attacked on Basic Rights and Freedoms Association building in Bahçelievler Quarter of İstanbul with stones. Material damage was occurred (halkinsesi.tv, 31 December)

(01/005) Raid to Party Building...
On 1 January Anti-terror Teams of Gaziantep Security Directorate raided to Democratic Society Party's (DTP) Gaziantep branch office on the grounds that there could be illegal printed material. The police confiscated many mewspapers, magazines and photographs (Gündem, 1 January).

(01/006) Death in Detention...
According to information obtained by Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFTHuman Rights Foundation of Turkey ), Halil Kiliç was killed in detention in Nusaybin Demirkurt Gendarmerie Station on 12 December 2007. He was 67 years old, unbalanced person who was detained in Nusaybin District of Mardin on the grounds that he was trying to cross Turkish-Syria border. Human Rights Association (IHD) made a public statement about this incident on 2 January (HRFT, 3 January).

(01/007) Human Rights Violations after the changes in the Law on Duties and Authority of Police...
On 2 January, Izmir Public Prosecution Office launched a case in Karsiyaka Heavy Penal Court No. 1 against the police officer O.A. who shot death Baran Tursun on the grounds that he did not obey the "stop" warning in Karsiyaka Quarter of Izmir on 24 November 2007 on charges of "homicide with probable intention". Prosecutors demanded 25 years' of imprisonment for O.A.. (ntvmsnbc.com, 2 January)

(01/008) Explosion in Istanbul...
On 2 January three people were wounded with an explosion in a trash container in Küçükçekmece Quarter of Istanbul (ntvmsnbc.com, 2 January).

(01/009) Ill-treatment in Prison...
Meriç Solmaz, Ankara representative of Socialist Platform of the Oppressed (ESP), had a retina rupture after the physical attack of guards in Sincan F Type Prison on 31 December (atilim.org, 2 January)

(01/010) Detentions and Arrests...
Mehmet Aslanoglu, Democratic Society Party's (DTP) Gaziantep Province chairperson and Metin Acet journalist of Gündem Newspaper were arrested on charges of "making propaganda of an illegal organization [Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKKKurdish Workers' Party )]" on 2 January. They were detained in policed raid to party building on 1 January (Gündem, 2 January).

(01/011) Report against the DTP deputy...
Ankara Public Prosecution Office prepared a report and sent it to Ministry of Justice against the Democratic Society Party's (DTP) deputy Ahmet Türk in connection with his words about the Turkish Genral Staff act of not inviting the DTP deputies to 30 Agust reception on charges of "inciting moral personality of Turkish Armed Forces under Article 301/2 TCP on 2 January. Türk said that "now it is clear that who is acting as separatist". (ntvmsnbc.com, 2 January).

(01/012) Sentenced Party Executive...
On 2 January Diyarbakir Heavy Penal Court No. 6 sentenced Ayhan Karabulut, DTP's Batman Province ex-chairperson, to nine years' and three months' of imprisonment in connection with the funeral of four militants of the armed wing of PKK, People's Defence Forces (HPGPeople's Defence Forces (armed wing of the PKK) ), on 28 March 2006 on charges of "helping and harboring PKK" and "making propaganda of an illegal organization" (ANF, 2 January).

4 January

(01/013) Explosion in Diyarbakir...
In the night of 3 January at 4:50 pm a bomb was exploded in Yenisehir Quarter of Diyarbakir as a service bus which was carrying military personnel was crossing by. Five people were killed and 110 people were wounded because of the explosion. According to the news 30 of the people who were wounded are military personnel (ntvmsnbc, 4 January)
After the explosion 12 people were detained and Diyarbakır Public Prosecution Office authorized the security forces with "unlimited search" permission (anf, 4 January).

(01/014) Sentenced Editor...
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 9 sentenced Aynur Özbakir, the owner and editor of Art and Life Magazine (Sanat ve Hayat Dergisi), to 5 months' of imprisonment and to a fine of 375 YTL, in connection with publishing the last letter of İbrahim Kaypakkaya in 12th issue of the magazine on charges of "making propaganda of illegal, armed organization" (atilim.org, 3 January).

(01/015) Sentenced Protestors...
Antakya Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 sentenced eight people to a fine of 17,000 YTL in connection with the protest in Körübaşı District of Antakya on 19 December 2001, the first anniversary of the "Return to Life Operation" in prisons on charges of "opposition to Law No. 2911" (atilim.org, 3 January).

(01/016) Detentions and Arrests...
22 students were detained on the grounds that making propaganda of an illegal organization in Eskisehir (anf, 3 January).
