(06/001) Operation against trade unionists…
Fourteen out of the thirty-five members of Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions (KESKConfederation of Trade Union in the Public Sector ) who had been detained in the morning of 28 May 2009 were arrested 1 June 2009. Yuksel Mutlu, a retired teacher and Human Rights Association’s (IHD) Honour Committee member, was also among the arrested people. Six detainees had been released on 29 May 2009 (TIHV, 1 Haziran).

Serpil Tütmez, a student of Dicle University and a member of Federation of Democratic Rights (DHF) applied to Human Rights Association’s (IHD/HRAHuman Rights Association ) Diyarbakir Branch and claimed that she has been threatened by Diyarbakir Security Directorate’s Fighting with Terrorism Department on 30 May 2009 (atilim.org, 30 May).

Abdullah Ates, a student of Istanbul University, was seriously wounded in the attack of right-wingers just outside the university on 29 May 2009 (Gündem, 29 May).

Ihsan Holar (35) claimed that he was detained as he was quarrelling with his friend and he was beaten by police officers on the grounds that he resisted to the detention in Göle District of Ardahan Province on 29 May 2009 (Radikal, 31 May).

Imdat Özer (19) who went out of his house to fix his antenna as a demonstration going on was beaten by police teams in Hakkâri Province on 30 May 2009 (Gündem, 31 May).

Police officer Y.Ö. forced E.O. (14) to put his head in a urinal in Mehmet Avdan Primary School on the grounds that E.O. quarrelled with the son of the officer in Beylikova District of Eskisehir Province on 31 May 2009. An investigation was launched against the officer with the official complaint of the father of E.O. (Milliyet, 31 May).

An investigation was launched against the teacher of Turgut Reis Primary School on the grounds that he had beaten his student E.Ç. (10) in Konak District of Izmir Province on 27 May 2009 (Milliyet, 30 May).

Silivri (Istanbul) Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 went on hearing the case against Hakan Tastan ve Turan Topal in connection with “spreading Protestantism” on charges of “insulting Turkish Nation, the Republic of Turkey, the organs and institutions of the State” under Article 301 of TPCTurkish Penal Code on 28 May 2009. The hearing was postponed to 15 October 2009 (bianet.org, 29 May).

Law enforcement officers raided on the bureaus of Azadiya Welat Newspaper and Günlük Newspaper in Izmir Province on 31 May 2009 and detained Eyüp Tutal, Azadiya Welat Newspaper’s Izmir Correspondent, and Fatma Koçak, a reporter of Dicle News Agency on charges of “having illegal publications (ANF, 31 May).
