(02/001) Released persons…

Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 12 began to hear the case against 27 defendants (13 of the pre-trial detainees) who had been detained in the operation against Atilim Newspaper and Science Education Aesthetic Culture art Studies Foundation’s (BEKSAV) Socialist Platform of the Oppressed (ESP) and Socialist Youth Association (SGD), Sun News Agency in İstanbul, İzmir, Ankara, Diyarbakır, Bursa, Malatya, Çanakkale, and Tunceli Provinces on 8 September 2009 in connection with the funeral of Kutsiye Bozoklar (Işık Kutlu) on 19 July 2009 on charges of “committing offence on behalf of an illegal organisation” and “being a member of an illegal organisation” under Article 314 of TPCTurkish Penal Code on 29 January 2010.

The court adjudicated to release the pre-trial detainees and adjourned the hearin to 30 March 2010 (atilim.org, 29 January).

(02/002) Coercion in prison…

Nurettin Soysal, a lymph cancer patient and a prisoner in last 16 years, wrote a letter to President Abdullah Gül and stated that he wish to spend his last days with his family reported on 1 February 2010 (Zaman, 1 February).

(02/003) Intervention to the protest in Bursa Province…

Police teams interfered to the protest of private public transporters (dolmus) with pepper gas and batons in Bursa Province on 30 January 2010. Nine people were detained and four people were wounded in the intervention (Birgün, 31 January).

(02/004) Intervention to the football match…

Police teams interfered to the incidents in the match between Pendikspor-Sakaryaspor with pepper gas and batons in Pendik Stadium in İstanbul Province on 31 January 2010. Five people were wounded in the intervention (Radikal, 31 January).

(02/005) Hold of publication…

Kars Penal Court of Peace adjudicated to confiscate Bağımsızlık, Demokrasi, Sosyalizm İçin Yürüyüş Magazine’s issues 201, 202 and 203 and banned the distribution and sale of it on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” “praising crime and criminal” and “insulting the security forces” on 27 January 2010 (TİHV, 31 January).

(02/006) Convicted persons…

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 sentenced Özgür Tekin, Kemal Tekin, Famile Eren, Yakup Çetin and Mehmet Salih Tarın to 12 months of imprisonment each in connection with a wedding ceremony in Akçatarla Village of Nusaybin District of Mardin Province on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law on 31 January 2010 (Radikal, 31 January).

(02/007) Convicted persons…

On 29 January 2010 Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 sentenced 25 people to 10 months of imprisonment each in connection with the public statement organised by the Democratic People’s Party’s (DEHAP) District Branch in Ceylanpınar District of Şanlıurfa Province on 20 July 2004 on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law (Gündem, 29 January).

(02/008) Intervention to the action to support the workers…

The members of the Socialist Democracy Party (SDP) chained themselves in front of the Justice and Development Party’s (AKPJustice and Development Party ) İızmir Province Branch building to support the TEKEL workers who have been struggling against privatizations and lay-offs in Ankara Province on 29 January 2010. Police teams interfered the protest and detained 12 protestors with excessive use of force (ntvmsnbc.com, 29 January).

(02/009) Attack on party building…

Unidentified people attacked on the Peace and Democracy Party’s (BDPPeace and Democracy Party ) Sakarya Province Branch office on 29 January 2010. The windows of the office were broken and the electricity wires were cut in the attack (Zaman, 29 January).

(02/010) Attack on party building…

The windows of BDP’s Keçiören District Branch office (in Ankara Province) were broken in the attack on it by unidentified people on 30 January 2010 (atilim.org, 30 January).

(02/011) Fighting with Terrorism Law in practise…

S.A. and M.Ç. were arrested in Suruç District of Şanlıurfa Province on 30 January 2010 after the Supreme Court of Appeals had approved the local court’s 10 months of imprisonment each verdict on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” (Milliyet, 31 January).
