(10/185) Operations and clashes in South-east…

Four militants of Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKKKurdish Workers' Party ) armed wing People’s Defence Forces (HPGPeople's Defence Forces (armed wing of the PKK) ) were killed in the clashes in Yedisu, Adaklı and Kiğı Regions of Bingöl Province on 26 October 2009 (Milliyet, 27 October).

(10/186) Torture and ill-treatment in detention…

Şahabettin Yalçınkaya, Orhan Akyürek, Cihan Meşe and Rıdvan Akyürek were allegedly tortured in Kurudere Gendarmerie Station in Özalp District of Van Province on 25 October 2009. They had been detained on the grounds that they illegally crossed the Iran border (ANF, 26 October).

Three prisoners, İleri Kızılaltun, Burak Demirci and Ümit Çobanoğlu, were beaten by the guardians on the grounds that they resisted to “partial search” in Kırıklar (İzmir) Type Closed Prison No. 1 on 19 October 2009 (ozgurradyo.com, 26 October).

(10/188) Attack on students in university…

Private security officers of the Hacettepe University’s (Ankara) Beytepe Campus interfered to the students who opened a stand in the Campus on 26 October 2009. Police teams detained 66 students and a police officer was allegedly stabbed in the incident (Radikal, 26 October).

(10/189) Tried Journalists…

A case was launched by İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 9 against Filiz Koçali, the General Editor of Günlük Newspaper, and Ramazan Pekgöz, the News Director of the newspaper, in connection with the interview with Murat Karayılan, the Chairperson of the Executive Council of Koma Ciwaken Kurdistan-The League of Communities of Kurdistan (KCKUnion of Communities in Kurdistan ), that was published in the newspaper on 7–8–9 August 2009 on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law and “publishing the statements of an illegal organisation (Günlük, 26 October).

On 26 October 2009 İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 10 sentenced Haftalık Bağımsızlık, Demokrasi, Sosyalizm için Yürüyüş Magazine with hold of publication and confiscated its issue no. 195 published on 25 October 2009 on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” (TİHV, 26 October).

İstanbul Chief Public Prosecution Office launched a case in İstanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 against Kemal Göktaş, a journalist of Vatan Newspaper, in connection with his book The Murder of Hrant Dink: Media, Judiciary, The State (Hrant Dink Cinayeti: Medya, Yargı, Devlet) on charges of “publishing confidential documents” under Article 336 of TPCTurkish Penal Code (TİHV; atilim.org, 26 October).

İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 2 went on hearing the case against Veysi Sarısözen, a columnist of Günlük Newspaper in connection with his article published on 6 February 2009 on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law on 26 October 2009. Veysi Sarısözen told in the hearing that he did not shouted PKK in the meetings but he witnessed that a million people shouted like that in a meeting in Diyarbakır Province. This there is no need to make propaganda because the people already have been doing it. The hearing was postponed to March 2010 (bianet.org, 26 October).
