(09/001) Operations, Attacks in the South-east…

As the result of fire opened on a group of village guards returning from duty in Şenköy town in Midyat district, Mardin province on 27 August 2011 one village guard was killed and four of them were injured (DHA, 27 August).

(09/002) Operations, Attacks in the South-east…

On 28 August 2011 a mine exploded in Hakkâri province, Şemdinli district, near Öveç village when a military vehicle passed; killing three soldiers and injuring another three soldiers (DHA, 28 August).

As the result of a clash that occurred in Hakkâri province, Yüksekova district in the Dağlıca region around Karataş on 28 August 2011 two militants died (DHA, 28 August).

(09/009) Explosion in Antalya…

As the result of the detonation of explosives being buried in the sand of a beach in Antalya, Kemer district six people were injured on 28 August 2011 (ntvmsnbc.com, 28 August).

As the result of the detonation of explosives being buried in the sand of the beach in Konyaaltı, Antalya, Kemer district two people were injured on 26 August 2011 (Vatan, 26 August).

(09/011) Extra-judicial execution in Hakkâri…

On 28 August 2011 a group of people protested against the air operation of the Turkish Armed Forces directed at the Federal Region Kurdistan and volunteering as living shield in Hakkâri, Çukurca district, Narlı village. The police used gas bombs against the group. When the capsule of a bomb hit the chest of Yıldırım Ayhan, member of the provincial parliament in Van for the BDPPeace and Democracy Party he lost his life (ntvmsnbc.com, 28 August).

(09/012) Killing by unknown assailants in Tunceli…

On 30 August 2011 the taxi driver İbrahim Ergil (42) was kidnapped by a group of armed people when he had a picnic with friends in Tunceli, Ovacık district at the river Aksu. On 31 August 2011 his corpse was found (DHA, 31 August).

(09/013) Attempt of an extra-judicial execution in Denizli…

On 28 August 2011 İ.Ş. allegedly wanted and not listening to stop warnings was seriously injured when police officers shot at him in Denizli (Milliyet, 29 August).

(09/014) The Şerzan Kurt case…

On 11 May 2010 a verbal quarrel between Kurdish students at Muğla University and a racist group turned into a fight. When the police intervened the student Şerzan Kurt (21) was heavily wounded and died in hospital on 19 May 2010. Later police officer Gültekin Şahin was detained on charges of having fired the shots on order of the temporary chief of the department to fight terrorism. On 26 August 2011 Eskişehir Heavy Penal Court continued to hear this case.

At the hearing it was discovered that in the reports of an international and a national criminal office images that could enlighten the cause of death had not been taken in time and that additional pictures had been recorded on them.

The court listened to the parties and rejected the demand to release the police officer Gültekin Şahin. It decided to hear the secret witness X at the next hearing and adjourned the hearing to 21 Otober 2011 (ANF, 27 August).

(09/016) Violations as a result of extreme use of force of the uniformed forces...

In Adana Mehmet Köseoğlu (30) killed his wife Ezgi Köseoğlu (22) because she wanted a divorce and then hid in a house that was surrounded by the police on 28 August 2011. The police officers slapped a spectator and removed him from the scene (Sabah, 29 August).

(09/017) Pressure in the Prisons…

In 28 August 2011 it was learned that the Forensic Institute had not prepared a report since one year on Fatma Tokmak staying at Bakırköy (İstanbul) Women's Prison to the effect that she was in constant need of treatment as her lawyers alleged. The lawyer of Fatma Tokmak, Eren Keskin stated that they would appeal to the Human Rights Inspection Commission in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey because her client had been victimized (Evrensel, 28 August).

(09/019) Journalists on Trial…

On 26 August 2011 the investigation against 12 people including the reporter of the daily Milliyet, Nedim Şener and the journalist Ahmet Şık who had been detained on 6 March 2011 as part of the Ergenekon investigations concluded. Istanbul Republican Prosecutor with special power, Cihan Kansız sent the 134-page indictment concerning 14 people, 12 of them in pre-trial detention to İstanbul Heavy Penal Court 16.

In the indictment it was demanded that the suspects Yalçın Küçük, Soner Yalçın, Barış Terkoğlu, Barış Pehlivan, Doğan Yurdakul, Müesser Yıldız, Coşkun Musluk, Mehmet Sait Çakır, Ahmet Şık, Hanefi Avcı, Nedim Şener, Kaşif Kozinoğlu, Ahmet Mümtaz İdil and İklim Ayfer Kaleli be convicted for having founded an armed organization, supported it, incited to hatred and enmity, obtained secret documents on the security of the State, obtained secret documents banned to be made public, violated the privacy of life, recorded personal documents and tried to influence the judiciary (ntvmsnbc.com, 26 August).

(09/020) Detained writer…

Writer Edip Yüksel, who on 26 August 2011 had come to İstanbul, Fatih district to break his fastening, was detained in front of Şehzadebaşı Mosque. It was learned that Edip Yüksel had been detained because he did not participate in three trials that had been initiated against him under Article 301 Turkish Penal Code in connection with articles he had published on his website www.19.org (Hürriyet, 28 August).

(09/021) Members of the "Peace and Democratic Solution Group" on trial...

On 25 August 2011 Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court 4 continued to hear the case of 10 of the 34 members of the "Peace and Democratic Solution Group" who on 10 October 2009 had returned from the Kandil Mountain and the Mahmur Camp in Northern Iraq. They are charged with having made propaganda for an illegal organization. The court heard the defence of the defendants, decided to prolong the pre-trial detention and adjourned the hearing to 18 September 2011 (Özgür Gündem, 26 August).

(09/022) Mayor Convicted…

On 25 August 2011 Erzurum Heavy Penal Court 2 heard the case of Murat Öztürk, who had been a candidate for the DTP to become mayor of Ağrı. He had been sentenced to 14 years, two months' imprisonment for incidents that occurred when allegations of fraud during the local election of 29 Mart 2009 were raised. The 9th Chamber of the Court of Cassation had quashed this sentence so that a re-trial had to be conducted. At the end of the hearing the court sentenced Murat Öztürk to five years, eight months' imprisonment for incitement to commit a crime and praising a crime and criminal (Özgür Gündem, 26 August).

(09/024) Detentions and arrests…

Seven of 17 villagers that had been detained on 26 August 2011 in connection with four different explosions in Hakkâri, Çukurca district on 17 August 2011 that had resulted in the death of eight soldiers and one village guard were arrested on 29 August 2011 (Zaman, 29 August).

On 27 August 2011 Muhammed Cihad Saatçioğlu,member of the Revolutionary Socialist Workers' Party (DSIP), who had participated in a protest on Taksim Square on 21 August 2011 against the air operation of the Turkish Armed Forces directed at the Federal Region Kurdistan was arrested on charges of membership of an illegal organization. It was alleged that Muhammed Cihad Saatçioğlu was subjected to torture and ill-treatment in custody (Marksist.org, 27 August).
