(05/099) The case on the murder of Hrant Dink…

Istanbul Heavy Penal Court for Juveniles No. 2 went on hearing the fourth hearing of the case against Ogün Samast in connection with the murder of Hrant Dink on 19 January 2007 on charges of “homicide” on 25 May 2011.

After the verbal legal argument of Samast the court adjourned the hearing for the preparation of the legal argument of the prosecutor on the essence of the case to 17 June 2011 (bianet.org, 26 May).

(05/100) Ongoing torture in detention case...

Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 7 went on hearing the case against the eight police officers including Adil Serdar Saçan, the former director of the Fighting with Organised Crimes Directorate of Istanbul Security Directorate, in connection with torturing the 27 members of Bilim Araştırma Vakfı (an Islamist foundation notorious with its anti-Darwinist ideas) who had been detained on12 November 1999 on charges of “torturing” on 25 May 2011.

The prosecutor in the legal argument on the essence of the case claimed that detainees were tortured with methods such as beating, pulling hair, hitting the back and face of the person, hanging and squeezing the testis and asked for the imprisonment of Adil Serdar Saçan and two officers to 8 years. The court adjourned the hearing to take the legal arguments of the defendants (Sabah, 26 May).

(05/101) Acquitted antimilitarist…

Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 10 acquitted Ezgi Sarıtaş in connection with reading the public statement to support İnan Suver a pre-trial detainee who has been tired on the grounds that he had declared his conscientious objection to military service in Ankara Province on 31 August 2010 on charges of “alienating people from military service” under Article 318 of TPCTurkish Penal Code on 25 May 2011 (TİHV, 25 May).

(05/102) Ongoing KCKUnion of Communities in Kurdistan Case in Ankara Province…

On 25 May 2011 Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 12 began to hear the case against 42 defendants -18 of them pre-trial detainees- who had been detained in Ankara Province on 27 November 2010 on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation - Koma Ciwaken Kurdistan-Kurdistan Communities League /Assembly of Turkey (KCK/TMKCK Par lament Turkey ), the KCK is the intend to organize the Kurdish people as an umbrella organization that includes Kurdistan Workers Party (PKKKurdish Workers' Party )” under Article 314 of TPC. After taking the legal arguments of the defendants the court released 7 defendants (ANF, 25 May).

(05/103) Finalised investigation on the intervention to the students’ protest…

Police teams had interfered with batons, pepper gas and pressured water to the protest of the members of the Student Youth Trade Union (Öğrenci Gençlik Sendikası (Genç-Sen)) against the meeting of the university rectors in Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul Province organised by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 4 December 2010 and had detained 59 students. Meanwhile police did not allow the buses that were carrying the students from the vicinity of Istanbul to enter Istanbul Province.

Istanbul Governorate finalised its investigation on the incidents on 25 May 2011. The governorate partially gave permission for the investigation against 23 police officers in connection with the incident in which Miraç Efe’s nasal bone was fractured in intervention in the entrance of Istanbul Province. The governorate did not give permission against the other 48 officers and claimed that the law-enforcement officers used gas bombs in order to calm down the students (Vatan, 26 May).

(05/104) Incidents before the general election for the deputies on 12 June 2011…

Unidentified people opened fire to the election minibus of Faysal Sarıyıldızan independent deputy candidate supported by the Labour, Freedom and Democracy Blog in Yakacık Village of Cizre District of Şırnak Province on 25 May 2011 causing material damage (ANF, 25 May).

Unidentified people attacked on the province branch offices of the Justice and Development Party (AKPJustice and Development Party ) in Diyarbakır Province on 25 May 2011 with a sound bomb causing material damage (ANF, 25 May).

(05/105) Detentions and arrests…

Two (including the province chairperson of the BDPPeace and Democracy Party ) out of the seven detainees who had been detained in Eskişehir Province on 24 May 2011 in the synchronised raids of the fighting with terror departments in five cities on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation - Koma Ciwaken Kurdistan-Kurdistan Communities League /Assembly of Turkey (KCK/TM), the KCK is the intend to organize the Kurdish people as an umbrella organization that includes Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)” were arrested on 25 May 2011 (Zaman, 26 May).

Twenty-three people were detained in the synchronised raids of the Fighting with Terror Department on NGOs and political parties in Adana Province on 25 May 2011 (bianet.org, 25 May).
