(02/149) Ongoing case suspicious suicide due to torture in detention …

İstanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 5 went on hearing the case against five health workers in connection with the suicide of Onur Yaser Can who had jumped from his balcony naked due to torture and ill-treatment in detention in İstanbul Province in 2010 on charges of “negligence of duty” on 22 February 2012.

After hearing the legal argument of the defendants the court adjourned the hearing to 9 May 2012 (TİHV, 22 February).

(02/150) Coercion in prison…

Vatan Newspaper’s reporter Çağdaş Ulus who has been a pre-trial detainee in the framework of the KCKUnion of Communities in Kurdistan investigation in Maltepe (İstanbul) L Type Closed Prison No. 1 was forced to clean the toilets of the guardians and he was beaten on the grounds that he declined the guardians on 17 February 2012 (ANF, 22 February).

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 7 began to hear the case against 23 defendants 16 of them are pre-trial detainees including Azadiya Welat Newspaper’s former editor-in-chief Tayip Temel on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation” under Article 314 of TPCTurkish Penal Code on 22 February 2012. The court declined the demand of the defendants to make their legal argument in Kurdish and adjourned the hearing to hear the confidential witnesses to 30 April 2012 (ozgurradyo.com, 22 February).

(02/152) Acquitted juveniles…

On 22 February 2012 İstanbul Court for Juveniles No. 1 acquitted three juveniles in connection with the action on Galata Bridge for “Obligatory Religion Lessons Should be Annulled” by The League of High School Students/Liseli Öğrenci Birliği (LÖB) in İstanbul Province on 17 January 2011 on charges of “opposing to the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations” on grounds that demonstrating is a democratic right (ETHA, 22 February).

On 22 February 2012 Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No. 2 sentenced Hemê Heci to ten months of imprisonment in connection with singing in the Newroz Celebrations in Kars Province in 2010 on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law (ANF, 22 February).

Fatma Can, Haydar Ayırtır, Şahzade Abaylı and Bahar Alkan were detained in home raids in Kars Province and Kağızman District of Kars Province on 22 February 2012 (ANF, 22 February).

(02/155) Protests about the anniversary of the day in which Abdullah Öcalan was brought to Turkey (15 February 1999)…

Four people who had been detained in home raids in İstanbul Province on 12 February 2012 were arrested on 22 February 2012 (ANF, 22 February).

(02/156) Home raids in İstanbul Province…

One of the two detainees who had been were in home raids in Eyüp District of İstanbul Province was arrested on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front -Devrimci Halk Kurtuluş Parti/Cephesi (DHKP/CRevolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front )” on 22 February 2012 (atilim.org, 22 February).
