(08/056) Operations and clashes in South-east…

Gendarmerie Specialised Corporal Emrah Yalım (26) and 4 HPGPeople's Defence Forces (armed wing of the PKK) militants were killed in the clash between Turkish Armed Forces and Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKKKurdish Workers' Party ) armed wing People’s Defence Forces (HPG) in Şemdinli District of Hakkari Province on 21 August 2010 (ntvmsnbc.com, 21 August).

A soldier was wounded in the clash in Dereköy and Ardıç Village region in Pertek District of Tunceli Province on 22 August 2010 (Zaman, 23 August).

(08/057) Murder by unknown assailants in Hakkâri Province…

Hacı Sait Cami’s imam Aziz Tan was killed by unidentified person(s) as he was walking his home after the morning call for namaz in Pehlivan Quarter in Hakkâri Province in the morning of 22 August 2010 (ntvmsnbc.com, 23 August).

(08/058) Kidnapped peasants in Hatay Province…

According to the statement of Hatay Governorate Mesut Çelik (40) and Ahmet Üneş (30) were kidnapped by HPG militants from their fields in Tiyek Village on 21 August 2010 and they were released on 22 August 2010 in Küçük Çalak Region (Sabah, 23 August).

(08/059) Case launched against Osman Baydemir…

Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecution Office launched a case against Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Osman Baydemir in connection with financially aiding 16 year-old D.K. who had joined the PKK on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation by intentionally helping” under Article 314/2 of TPCTurkish Penal Code . The prosecutor asked for an imprisonment up to 10 years in his indictment (birgun.net, 23 August).

(08/060) The Case on the murder of Hrant Dink…

Prime Ministry declined the demand of the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecution Office for the trial of the members of the National Intelligence Organisation (MİT) in connection with the murder of the former editor in chief of Agos Newspaper on charges of negligence in office. Prosecutors have to get permission from prime ministry to investigations against higher officials in Turkey (Radikal, 23 August).

(08/061) Confiscated newspaper...

İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 14 adjudicated to confiscate all copies of Azadiya Welat Newspaper’s issue no. 1252 dated on 21 August 2010 in connection with the news that were published in the issue on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” and “praising crime and criminal” and to hold of publication for one month. This is the eighth confiscation verdict against the newspaper in last four years (ANF, 21 August)

(08/62) Temporary security zones...

Turkish Armed Forces declared in its website on 20 August 2010 with its information note 97 that 6 areas in Buzul Mountain Region between 02 September 2010-02 December 2010; 9 areas in Rejgar Dağı-Areadüz Region between 23 August 2010-02 December 2010; 18 areas in İkiyaka Mountains Region between 02 September 2010-02 December 2010; 11 areas in Altın Mountains Region between 31 August 2010-02 December 2010; 8 areas in Kurşunlu/Dicle/Diyarbakır Region between 23 August 2010-23 September 2010 and 5 areas in Tuz Lake Firing Area Region between 05 October 2010-07 October 2010 as temporary security zones and banned the trespassing of the civilians (tsk.tr, 20 August).
