(11/091) “Stop” warning in İstanbul Province…
Davut Kömür was killed by police officers on the grounds that he did not obey the “stop” warning in Esenyurt District of İstanbul Province in the night of 19 November 2009. Police officer Oğuzhan Vural and the minibus driver İsmail Durmuş were wounded in the incident. According to the authorities of İstanbul Security Directorate after the stop warning two persons began to run away and opened fire and the police team replied the fire (ntvmsnbc.com, 20 November).

İzmir Heavy Penal Court No. 8 began to hear the case against 31 members and executives of Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions (KESK) who had been detained in the operation that began with the order of İzmir Chief Public Prosecution Office on 28 May 2009. 22 out of the 31 defendants are pre-trial detainees. According to the indictment the defendants are members of “Democratic Labour Movement (KCK/TMKCK Par lament Turkey -DEK)” that was constituted in the coordination of “illegal Kurdistan Democratic Community/Turkey Assembly (KCK/TM)”. The hearing was postponed to 20 November 2009 on the grounds that the taking of the testimonies of the defendants could not be finalised in the hearing (Zaman; Radikal, 19 November).

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 6 sentenced Mehmet Ay, an executeive of Democratic Society Party (DTP) to 13 years and 6 months of imprisonment in connection with the protest in Siirt Province in February 2008 on charges of “committing offence on behalf of an organisation although he is not a member” under Article 220/6 of TPCTurkish Penal Code , “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law and “opposing to the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations” on 19 November 2009 (Cumhuriyet, 19 November).

Mehmet Güler the writer of the novel Decisions Harder Than Death which was published in March 2009 and the publisher of it Ragıp Zarakolu who is the owner Belge Press on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law on 19 November 2009. The court postponed the hearing to 25 March 2010 (bianet.org, 19 November).

Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 11 went on hearing the case against four members of Karadeniz Freedoms Association -Ali Kemal Aşık, Hayriye Gündüz, Muhammed Ayvaz and İhsan Özdil- who were arrested on charges of “having illegal publications” in May 2009.
