(06/094) Torture and ill-treatment in detention…
Siyar Moral (18) applied to Human Rights Association’s (HRAHuman Rights Association /IHD) Mersin Branch on 17 June 2009 and claimed that he was tortured and ill-treated in Mersin Security Directorate, Pozanti (Adana) M Type Closed Prison for Juveniles and Kürkçüler (Adana) F Type Closed Prison in last five months during his pre-trial detention (Gündem, 17 June).

(06/095) Excessive use of force by law enforcement officers…
Lawyer Ömer Esgünoglu was beaten by a police officer in the courthouse in Giresun Province on 16 June 2009. Ömer Esgünoglu stated that he will make an official complaint against the officer (Milliyet, 17 June).

(06/096) Coercion in prison…
The administration of Bolu F Type Closed Prison sentenced Seyhmuz Poyraz to ban of activities for 3 months in connection with his hunger strike to protest the coercion on Tamils in Sri Lanka on 17 June 2009 (atilim.org, 17 June).

(06/097) Acquitted people…
Bursa Penal Court of Peace No. 1 acquitted the eight members of the People’s House (Halkevleri) who had been tried in connection with the placard “Bulb Tayyip” they carried in a meeting in Bursa Province on 1 April 2008 on charges of “insulting a public officer due to his duty” on 17 June 2009 (Radikal, 17 Nisan).

(06/098) Operations against DTP…
On 17 June 2009 seven people in Diyarbakir, 5 people in Bitlis, 5 people in Sirnak and a person in Kiziltepe District of Mardin Provinces were detained in the operations against Democratic Society Party (DTP) which had begun on 14 April 2009 (ANF, 17 June).

(06/099) Detentions and arrests…
Batman’s vice mayor Mustafa Tugyildiz had been detained and released on 11 June 2009. The prosecutor objected to the release decision and he was detained again on 16 June 2009 and then he was arrested on charges of “opposition to the Law on Meetings (No. 2911)” (Gündem, 17 June).
DTP’s Sarikamis District chairperson Aydin Alkan was arrested on charges of insulting a public officer in Sarikamis District of Kars Province on 17 June 2009 (Milliyet, 18 June).
