(05/081) Violations as a result of extreme use of force of the uniformed forces...

On 17 May 2010 a police team stopped a car with transsexuals in Ankara and reportedly beat the five people in the car and used pepper gas. The five transsexuals were detained and taken to Esat Police Station. They were released after a medical examination at the Forensic Institute. The transsexuals by the name Buse, Selay, Türkan, Eser and Yeşim filed an official complaint against the police officers (TİHV, 18 May).

(05/082) Attempted extra-judicial executions in Hakkâri…

On 15 May 2010 the police intervened in a demonstration organized by the Democratic Free Women's Movement (DÖKH) in Hakkari under the slogan "Say stop to the rape culture". A plastic bullet hit the right eye of C.E. (8) and he lost sight on that eye (ANF, 17 May).

On 16 May 2010 police teams intervened in a wedding alleging that illegal slogans were being shouted. R.D. (14) was injured by a bullet in his stomach (Milliyet, 17 May).

On 15 May 2010 an armoured police vehicle ran out of control in Hakkâri and injured A.A. (5) (Gündem, 17 May).

On 15 May 2010 an armoured police vehicle ran out of control near Akalın village, Hakkâri, Yüksekova district. T.G. (12) who came from the opposite direction was seriously wounded (Radikal, 16 May).

(05/083) Arrest warrant for attempted extra-judicial execution in Muğla…

On 11 May 2010 a verbal quarrel between Kurdish students at Muğla University and a racist group turned into a fight. When the police intervened the student Şerzan Kurt (21) was heavily wounded by fire shot from an unidentified person. Six of the persons detained after the incident were arrested.

On 17 May 2010 the governor in Muğla declared that the police officer Gültekin Şahin had been arrested since the bullet that hit Şerzan Kurt had come out of his pistol.

Earlier Muğla governor Ahmet Altıparmak had declared that the weapon that had injured the student Şerzan Kurt did not belong to a police officer (Radikal, 17 May).

(05/084) Person Convicted…

On 17 May 2010 Izmir Penal Court 5 sentenced Berrin Tursun, mother of Baran Tursun, whom the police had killed in İzmir on 25 November 2007, because he allegedly did not listen to stop warnings, to 5 months and 20 days' imprisonment. The court found words Berrin Tursun used in a statement on her son's death to be an insult under Article 125 of the Turkish Penal Code (Milliyet, 17 May).

(05/085) Detentions and arrests…

In an operation against alleged members members of Koma Ciwaken Kurdistan (Union of Kurdish Communities) KCK/TMKCK Par lament Turkey (Turkey Assembly) six out of eight people that had been detained in Kars on 14 May 2010 were arrested on 17 May 2010 (Zaman, 17 May).
