(11/095) Death in Prison…
Authorities claimed that a prisoner Umut Bayram (20) committed suicide by hanging himself with his sweater in Maltepe Prison –in Istanbul Province- on 7 July 2008. Muzaffer Bayram, father of Umut Bayram, claimed that there is a mark of pound on his son’s head and blood stains in his clothes (Taraf, 16 November).

A civil police officer wounded Z.B. (12) on the grounds that he did not obey the “stop” warning in Baglar District of Diyarbakir Province16 November (ANF, 16 November).

Ercan Günesdogdu (27) was wounded from his neck and shoulder by police officer Y.A.’s (32) fire in police headquarters on the grounds that he was carrying a chopper and a handgun in Derepazari District of Rize Province on 15 November (ntvmsnbc.com, 16 November).

One Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKKKurdish Workers' Party ) armed wing People’s Defence Forces (HPGPeople's Defence Forces (armed wing of the PKK) ) militant was killed in the clash between HPG militants and security forces Amanos Mountains in Dörtyol District of Hatay Province in the night of 16 November (Vatan, 17 November).

Volkan Azizoglu (25) and Kadir Azizoglu (21) were beaten by police officers in a police vehicle and in the police station on the grounds that they did not have their identity cards on them in Göle District of Ardahan Province on 14 November (Milliyet, 16 November).

Akin Dumlu (19) who has been working in a pie seller was beaten by police officers in the shop and in the police minibus on the grounds that he asked the police officers to pull their cars off which prevents the entrance in Beyoglu District of Istanbul Province on 12 November. Officers also threatened him with death (Milliyet, 14 November).

On 13 November Diyarbakir Heavy Penal Court No. 5 sentenced the editor of Azadiya Welat Newspaper Tayyip Temel to 15 months’ of imprisonment on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law. The sentence then commuted to ban of demonstration or meeting for a year (atilim.org, 14 November).

Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 11 restricted the access to the website, www.lekolin.org, with its decision dated 23.09.2008 and No. 2008/5289 (ANF, 16 November).

Özgür Gelecek Newspaper was sentenced with hold of publication for one month on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” and “praising crime and criminal” under the Article of 215/1 of TPCTurkish Penal Code on 13 November (atilim.org, 14 November).

On 14 November Nigde Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 sentenced Democratic People’s Party (DEHAP) Nigde municipality assembly member Yusuf Polat, Nigde Province chairperson Ahmet Aslan, executives Ömer Sen, Ridvan Aktas, Emin Benek, Murat Beyter, Muhsin Demir, Nezir Biskir, Abdurahman Sen and Labour Party (EMEPLabour Party ) Province chairperson Semire Miçoogullari to two years’ of imprisonment in connection with the Newroz celebration in Nigde Province in 2005 (Gündem, 14 November).

Van Heavy Penal Court No. 3 sentenced Yüksekova municipality assembly member Ihsan Isbilir to 4 years’ and 5 months’ of imprisonment in connection with the Newroz Celebrations in Yüksekova District of Hakkâri Province on 23 March 2008 on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law (Gündem, 14 November).
(11/107) Detentions and arrests…
Twelve -Mehmet Nardan, Mehmet Aslan, Bayram Demirhan, Osman Demirhan, Ramazan Demirhan, Seyithan Karavil, Osman Eskicioglu, Hasan Özen, Ahmet Akyol, Tacettin Kutluk, Emrah Temel and Seyithan Ortaç- of the 26 people who had been detained in Adana Province were arrested by Adana Heavy Penal Court No. 6 on 14 November (ANF, 14 November).
Twenty one of the 32 people who had been detained in connection with the public statement of Democratic Society Party (DTP) in Ceyhan District of Adana Province on 21 October were arrested on 16 November (Zaman, 16 November).
Hüsnü Ormanli and Ömer Kabul who had been detained in home raids of Security Directorate’s Fighting with Terrorism Department in Silopi District of Sirnak Province in the morning of 14 November were arrested on charges of “distributing unauthorised bills” on 16 November (Gündem, 16 November).
Five readers of Workers-Peasants [Isçi-Köylü] Newspaper were detained in operations in Istanbul, Tekirdag and Mersin Provinces on 15 November (atilim.org, 15 November).
Seven of the ten people who had been detained in connection with the demonstration in Viransehir District of Sanliurfa Province on 13 November were arrested on 15 November (Zaman, 15 November).
