(06/059) People killed by police officer…
Police officer Melih Isikoglu’na (37) killed his ex-wife Emine Karadag (34) and her lawyer Özcan Akçiçek (36) in front of the court house after the case for the parental rights for their two children in Ödemis District of Izmir Province on 10 June 2009. After killing them with his firearm he committed suicide (Zaman, 11 June).

Zahide Kesici applied to Chief Public Prosecution Office and claimed that her daughter Gamze Kesici’s (22), a prisoner in Karatas (Adana) Prison for Women, hands were tied up and her hair were cut off without her consent on 10 June 2009 (Milliyet, 10 June).

Muharrem Cengiz, a member of popular music group Grup Yorum, and Cengiz Karakas were transferred to Trabzon E Type Closed Prison from Metris Prison without their consent on 8 June 2009 (halkinsesi.tv, 10 June).

Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 began to hear the case against Nedim Sener, a reporter of Milliyet Newspaper in connection with his book The Murder of Dink and Lies of Intelligence on charges of “attempting to influence fair trial”, “insulting officers on duty” and “intruding the privacy of communication” 10 June 2009 in which the prosecutor asked for an imprisonment up to eight years.
Nedim Sener has also been tried in two other cases which were launched with the official complaints of the intelligence officers related with the murder of Hrant Dink in which the prosecutors asked for an imprisonment up to 20 years (Milliyet, 10 June).

Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 12 began to hear the case against the writer of Günlük Newspaper, Veysi Sarisözen, and the owner of the newspaper, Ziya Çiçekçi, in connection with the article written by Sarisözen with the title “The people has been making the propaganda of an illegal organisation not we” published on 6 February 2009 in the newspaper on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law on 10 June 2009.
The court declared that if Ziya Çiçekçi would pay 20.000 TL as a pre-paid fine in ten days the case will be dropped and postponed the hearing to 26 October 2009 (bianet.org, 10 June).
(06/064) Finalised Al Qaeda Case…
The Supreme Court of Appeal’s Penal Chamber No. 9 approved the verdict of the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 10 against the allegedly executives of Al Qaeda on 10 June 2009. Louai Sakka, Fevzi Yitiz, Yusuf Polat and Harun Ilhan were sentenced to life sentence in solitary confinement with no possibility of parole. Adnan Ersöz and Osman Eken were sentenced to life sentence. Seyit Ertul was sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment on charges of “founding and executing the Konya Region branch of Al Qaeda”.
