(09/039) Operations, Attacks in the South-east…
One soldier and one police officer died and seven police officer were injured as the result of an attack with rocket launchers and long barrelled arms on the police headquarters and the command of the gendarmerie in Hakkâri Şemdinli district on 11 September 2011. Following the attack a clash broke out in the centre of the district rsulting in the death of the civilians Necdet Güreli, Tayyar Güreli and Osman Ertaş (14). Three civilians were injured (Radikal, 12 September).
On 9 September 2011 three armed persons kidnapped a police officer, who wanted to go to the market in Van, Çatak district. After the incident houses were searched in Van and Çatak district on 10 September. 29 people were detained (Yeni Şafak; ANF, 10 September).
(09/040) Torture and Ill-treatment in detention…
On 7 September 2011 Metin Arslan (31) was detained as a "suspect" while he was walking on the street in Diyarbakır, Çınar district. He had to be taken to the integrated hospital in Çınar because he fell ill as the result of torture and ill-treatment at Çınar Police HQ. The family of Metin Arslan filed an official complaint (Özgür Gündem, 11 September).
(09/041) Pressure in the Prisons…
On 9 September 2011 it was learned that relatives of prisoners in Erzurum E-type Prison who had come for an open visit conducted in the first week of each month were subjected to a subtle search and had been forced to take off their underwear. Those who objected to the practice were not allowed in (atilim.org, 9 September).
(09/042) Journalists on Trial…
On 26 August 2011 the investigation against 14 people including the reporter of the daily Milliyet, Nedim Şener and journalist Ahmet Şık, who had been arrested on 6 March 2011 on charges of membership of the organization “Ergenekon" was finalized. Specially authorized İstanbul prosecutor Cihan Kansız sent the 134-page indictment to Istanbul Heavy Penal Court 16.
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court 16 accepted the indictment against the suspects Yalçın Küçük, Soner Yalçın, Barış Terkoğlu, Barış Pehlivan, Doğan Yurdakul, Müesser Yıldız, Coşkun Musluk, Mehmet Sait Çakır, Ahmet Şık, Hanefi Avcı, Nedim Şener, Kaşif Kozinoğlu, Ahmet Mümtaz İdil and İklim Ayfer Kaleli for having founded an armed organization, supported it, incited to hatred and enmity, obtain secret documents on the security of the State, obtain secret documents banned to be made public, violate the privacy of life, recording personal documents and trying to influence the judiciary on 9 September 2011 and announced that the day for the first hearing will be determined on 12 September 2011 (bianet.org, 9 September).
(09/043) Publication of Newspaper stopped…
On 11 September 2011 the prosecutor's office in İstanbul decided to confiscate the 18th edition of the newspaper Halkın Günlüğü (Diary of the people) covering the time 10-20 September 2011 and to ban its publication for one month for having made propaganda for the Maoist Communist Party (MKP) (atilim.org, 11 September).
(09/044) Intervention to action in Şırnak…
The uniformed forces intervened into a protest march in Şırnak on 9 September 2011. During the quarrel with the demonstrators one police officer was wounded, when a sound bomb exploded (Zaman, 9 September).
(09/045) Intervention to meeting in Diyarbakır…
The governor's office in Diyarbakır did not permit a march to be held on 11 September 2011 from the human rights monument in Koşuyolu Park to Diyarbakır E-type Prison because of the 31st anniversary of the military coup on 12 September 2001 (ETHA, 11 September).
(09/046) Implementations of the Law to Fight Terror…
On 9 September 2011 Seyithan Karataş, member of the music group Koma Gimgim, was arrested in connection with the trial against him at Erzurum Heavy Penal Court 2 related to him singing Kurdish songs during the Neroz celebrations in Erzurum on 21 March 2011 (Özgür Gündem, 10 September).
(09/047) Detentions and arrests……
Of the 17 people that had been detained during parallel house raids of police teams of the department to fight terrorism in Adana on 8 September 2011 including the chair and executives of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDPPeace and Democracy Party ) and journalists 11 people including the chair of the BDP for Adana province, Zeki Karataş were arrested on 11 September 2011 on charges of membership to the illegal KCK/TMKCK Par lament Turkey (atilim.org, 11 September).
