(11/047) Death in Prison…
Authorities stated that pre-trial detainee Adem Yenilmez (29) committed suicide in Mus Prison on 24 September. Adem Yenilmez’s sister Fatma Aygün claimed that his brother was killed with a skewer –there are three wounds in his abdomen- and murderers tried to create a suicide image by hanging his body from a height lower than one and a half meters (Radikal, 7 November).

Emin Çakan (21), died in Tuzla Anatolia Health Centre on 9 November. Three people attacked on and seriously wounded him with knifes on the grounds that he was listening Kurdish music in Gebze District of Kocaeli Province on 6 November (atilim.org, 9 November).
(11/049) “Stop” Warning in Adana Province…
A.Y. (14) was seriously wounded by a police officer S.B. on the grounds that he did not obey the “stop” warning of the police officer whose motorbike was stolen in Adana Province on 9 November. An investigation was launched against the police officers S.B. and M.Y. who were dismissed from office (Yeni Safak; Cumhuriyet, 10 November).

Three soldiers were wounded in the attack of Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKKKurdish Workers' Party ) armed wing People’s Defence Forces (HPGPeople's Defence Forces (armed wing of the PKK) ) on the Çayirli Border Headquarters with mortar fire in Çukurca District of Hakkâri Province on 9 November (Yeni Safak, 10 November).

On 6 November Abdulselam Akan (38) was wounded with the explosion of a bomb as he was trying to prevent his cow from eating the plastic bag containing the explosives in Eruh District of Siirt Province (Mlilliyet, 7 November).
(11/052) Impunity in the case of torture in detention…
On 7 November Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 2 acquitted ten police officers in the case of Alpaslan Yelden who died in Izmir Security Branch Manager Murder by Unknown Assailants Bureau due to torture on 2 July 1999. The Supreme Court of Appeals’ Penal Chamber No. 1 annulled the local court’s verdict on the grounds that defendants were over sentenced before. Local court had sentenced the ten police officer to three years’ and 4 months’ of imprisonment which is the lowest limit (yeniozgurpolitika.com, 10 November).
(11/053) Impunity in the investigation of torture…
On 9 November Siirt Chief Public Prosecution Office decided that there is no grounds for an investigation against the 15 police officers who claimed to inflict torture on Mehmet Zeki Ete who was detained in Newroz Celebrations on 21 March 2008 in Siirt Province (ANF, 9 November).
(11/054) Human Rights Violations after the changes in the Law on Duties and Authority of Police...
A man who introduced himself as a police official approached Cengiz Sezgin (30) and his friends and asked for identification cards in Eminönü District of Istanbul Province in the night of 7 November. Civil police officer sprayed pepper gas to the face of Sezgin who asked him to show his official identity card. Police officer then shot Sezgin from his right knee with three bullets on the grounds that Sezgin was running away. An investigation was launched against Cengiz Sezgin who was hospitalised after the incident on charges of “resisting to police officer” and “attacking with knife” (atilim.org, 9 November).

A group of parents in Adana Province claimed that an English language teacher S.A. in a primary school has been beating their children on 5 November (Milliyet, 7 November).

Yüksekova Penal Court of First Instance adjudicated to arrest the Esendere Mayor Hamit Kaya and Yahya Baran in connection with the “Honourable Öcalan” petitions they gave to the public prosecution office in Yüksekova District of Hakkâri Province on charges of “praising crime and criminal” under the Article of 215/1 of TPCTurkish Penal Code on 7 November (Gündem, 7 November).

Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No 2. sentenced three DTP members -Mehmet Sena Tasdemir, Muhammet Uygar and Nimetullah Çelebi- to 10 months’ of imprisonment in connection with the protest against the cross border operations in Patnos District of Agri Province on 28 February 2008 on charges of “shouting illegal slogans” on 7 November (ANF, 8 November).
(11/058) Attack on party building…
Unidentified people attacked on the DTP’s Buca District -in Izmir Province- Branch office with stones and eggs on 8 November. This is the fifth attack on the same office in last seven months (Gündem, 9 November).
(11/059) Detentions and arrests…
Mesut Basar, Emin Kartal, Cengiz Tekmen, Mehmet Ayan, Hamza Katan, Hursit Batmaz, Ali Batmaz, Ahmet Bilgi and M.E.B (15) who had been detained on 5 November on the grounds that they attended to the public statement in Sirnak Province on 21 October were arrested on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation”, “being a member of an illegal organisation”, “making illegal demonstration” and “opposing to the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations” on 7 November (Gündem, 7 November).
Mehmet Sakar and Abdullah Koçer who had been detained with four other people in the raid of security forces to Batman Province branch of Struggle and Solidarity Association against Poverty [Yoksullukla Mücadele ve Dayanisma Dernegi (YMDD)] on 4 November were arrested on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation” on 8 November (Gündem, 8 November).
Five of the 12 students who had been detained after the symposium on “The Importance of Education in Native Tongue” in Dicle University on 4 November were arrested on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” on 7 November (ANF, 8 November).
