As the result of a mine explosion that occurred on 7 August 2001 in Hakkâri province, Çukurca district when a vehicle of the police passed one police officer was killed and three officers were injured. During operations that were conducted after the explosion 20 members of the BDPPeace and Democracy Party were detained. On 17 August 2011 four different explosions happened in Hakkâri province, Çukurca district killing eight soldiers and a village guard; 15 soldiers were injured. The corpse of the killed soldier Erhan Ar could not be reached. Following the explosion the cross-border military air operation towards the Federal Kurdish region started (ntvmsnbc.com, 22 August).

On 21 August 2011 it was learned that during the cross-border military air operations that the Turkish Armed Forces started against the Kandil mountain and the Federal Kurdish region on 17 August 2011 six people including two children lost their lives in a civilian car when the war planes bombed the road between Kortek and Ranya (ANF, 21 August).

As the result of an attack by unknown people on a petrol station in Şanlıurfa province, Suruç district, Yönlü village on 9 August 2011 the owner of the station Bilal Çelikten and his brother Deyyan Çelikten lost their lives. It was alleged that the killed persons had been threatened for some time, because they had not given money to HPG militants (Sabah, 11 August).

It was determined that the bullet that hit İmdat Ünal (24) in Uşak on 2 July 2011 while he was walking in the street and which resulted in his death on 9 July 2011 came from the pistol of police officer Orhan Kahraman (28), who was celebrating his wedding on that day (Radikal, 19 August).

It was alleged that the prisoner Şeyhmus Yalçın suffering from epilepsy and staying in Midyat (Mardin) M-type Prison died of brain hemorrhage in his cell on 6 August 2011 (Birgün, 8 August).

On 9 August 2011 it was learned that Gülay Çetin (48), who caught stomach and ovary cancer during her stay in Antalya F-type Prison died in July 2011 (muhalifgazete.com, 9 August).
(08/077) Developments relating to killings by unknown assailant in the 1990'ies…
On 19 August 2011 it was learned that former special police officer Ayhan Çarkın, who had been arrested after his confession on killings by unknown assailants in the 1990'ies made further confessions. Ayhan Çarkın stated in his testimony that the arms “Uzi” used in the killings had been provided by Korkut Eken. Korkut Eken, İbrahim Şahin and Mehmet Ağar knew of all executions.
In his testimony Ayhan Çarkın said that following the killing of Mecit Baskın, director of the registration office in Altındağ (Ankara) he had talked to Ayhan Akça and Ziya Bandırmalıoğlu and had been informed that Mecit Baskın had been target number one.
Ayhan Çarkın also confessed that the elderly brother of Hacı Vural, who was suspect in the killing of Motherland Party (ANAP) deputy Alparslan Pehlivanlı in Kırıkkale in 1994, Metin Vural, chairing ANAP in Keskin district had been killed by special agents.
Of the eight special agents that had been detained on 11 August 2011 related to the confessions of Ayhan Çarkın, Ayhan Akça, Uğur Şahin, Seyfettin Lap, Ayhan Özkan, Enver Ulu, Yusuf Yüksel and Ahmet Demirel were arrested in connection with the 1994 killings of Namık Erdoğan, inspector in the Ministry of Health, Mecit Baskın, director of the registration office in Altındağ (Ankara), Faik Candan, chair of DEP in Ankara and the lawyer Yusuf Ekinci (ntvmsnbc.com, 11 August; atilim.org, 19 August).

On the second day of the excavation work in Tunceli province to find a mass grave, where the brother of Hüsnü Yıldız, who had been on hunger strike for 65 days, allegedly was buried human bones belonging to 13 people were found close to the command of the gendarmerie in Çemişgezek district on 13 August 2011.
The excavation work on a mass grave that allegedly contained the corpses of 19 people who had entered a clash in Tunceli, Aliboğazı region in 1997 was done at three different points next to the command of the gendarmerie in Çemişgezek district under the observation of Malatya Republican Prosecutor Şeref Gürkan (ntvmsnbc.com, 13 August).
(08/079) JITEM trial related to killings of unknown assailants in Cizre…
On 5 August 2011 Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 6 continued to hear the case of 7 defendants, members of JITEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Fight against Terrorism) charged with 20 killings that had been committed between 1993 and 1995 when Cemil Temizöz had been the commander of Cizre Gendarmerie Station in Şırnak province, Cizre district. It was the 27th hearing.
At the hearing former Eskişehir Chief of Police Hanefi Avcı alleged that the perpetrators of the killing of Vedat Aydın, who had been abducted in Diyarbakır on 5 July 1991 and then was killed under torture, belonged to JİTEM. Hanefi Avcı expressed that they determined that JİTEM, a structure within the gendarmerie, had committed many killings and had been involved in many bomb attacks.
Hanefi Avcı also said that the renegades had been placed in the public sector with their true or secret identity and by court's decision they had been given 15 days' leave from prison and taken to operations.
After listening to Hanefi Avcı and the defendants the court adjourned the hearing to 16 September 2011 to complete the missing parts of the file (haberturk.com, 8 August).

The headman of Güroluk village, Ali Arslan, who had been detained after the attack in Van province, Başkale district on 1 August 2011 that had resulted in the death of three soldiers, stated that he, his parents and İsmet Çiftçi had been tortured and ill-treated in custody and filed an official complaint against the responsible persons (Taraf, 6 August).

Bedirhan Taş was injured to his shoulder when the police intervened in a protest demonstration in Mersin on 5 August 2011 and a capsule from a gas bomb hit him in his shop where he was sitting (ANF, 6 August).

Lokman Acar complained to the Ankara branch of the Human Rights Association (HRAHuman Rights Association ) that three police officers had jointly beaten him when he was walking in the streets of Ankara on 9 August 2011 and had taken him to Çankaya Police Station. Lokman Acar had a broken arm because of the blows he received and filed an official complaint with the public prosecutor (ANF, 15 August).

It was alleged that six children who had been detained in Siirt on 10 August 2011 during parallel raids of houses had been beaten during detention and in custody (ANF, 10 August).

The Rector of the Alparslan University (Muş), Prof. Dr. Nihat İnanç, stated that there had been tension in the Police House during a dinner organized for the Minister for Customs and Trade, Hayati Yazıcı who had participated in the ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the campus. He and his press officer had been beaten by the police chief and a police officer (ntvmsnbc.com, 13 August).

Civilian police officers from Taksim Police HQ beat Selma Yıldırım (47) in Istanbul on 14 August 2011 when she put up a table in Tarlabaşı to sell cigarettes. Selma Yıldırım said that the police officers looked at the ID and when they found out that she was a Kurd because of her place of birth they started to beat her (ANF, 15 August).

On 16 August 2011 it was learned that Uğur Kantar who was doing his military service in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus had fallen into a coma on 25 July 2011 because of torture and ill-treatment over three days without anything to eat or drink in the disciplinary ward called "disco". He was taken to the military academy for medicine in Gülhane (Ankara) for treatment. It was alleged that Uğur Kantar lost the functions of his brains despite the treatment (bianet.org, 16 August).

Recep Kılıç (40), member of the parliament in Tekkeköy municipality for the AKPJustice and Development Party was beaten by a police officer in front of his enterprise in Samsun on 11 August 2011 after they had an argument about a vehicle bringing goods to the workplace that blocked traffic. Recep Kılıç, who was hit on his head with a walkie-talkie and sprayed with pepper gas filed an official complaint (Milliyet, 21 August).

On 14 August it was learned that the administration in Sincan (Ankara) F-type Prison 1 confiscated and destroyed the draft of a book by prisoner Halil Gündoğan under the title "From Metris to Munzur-the story of an escape" in which he explained how in 1988 he escaped from Metris (İstanbul) Military Prison by digging a tunnel (bianet.org, 14 August).

On 20 July 2011 Ankara Heavy Penal Court 12 heard the case of 11 people, who had been arrested during the raid on the Youth Culture Centre on 27 November 2010. When the defendants answered questions in Kurdish soldiers of the gendarmerie attacked and beat them.
On 22 August 2011 it was learned that the administration of Sincan F-type Prison had ordered a ban of visits and solitary confinement for one month for the 11 prisoners (Evrensel, 22 August).

On 9 August 2011 Malatya Heavy Penal Court 3 heard the case of Aysel Doğan, member of the group of peace ambassadors that had come to Turkey on 29 October 1999 on the call of Abdullah Öcalan in connection with slogans she allegedly shouted during the celebration of the Day of Work in Tunceli on 1 May 2011. The court sentenced her to three years' imprisonment for having made propaganda for an illegal organization (ANF, 9 August).

On 8 August 2011 Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court 4 heard the case of Yusuf Tele, mayor in Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak province related to the fact that during the second culture, art and nature festival in Çırav he had worn local clothing (leşkeri). The court sentenced him to 20 months' imprisonment for having made propaganda for an illegal organization (bianet.org, 9 August).

On 11 August 2011 it was learned that Hakkari Heavy Penal Court sentenced Şükran Turan to 18 months' imprisonment for having made propaganda for an illegal organization, when during celebrations of World Women's Day in Hakkâri province, Çukurca district on 7 March 2010 she sang Kurdish songs (yeniozgurpolitika.com, 11 August).

On 16 August 2011 Siirt Penal Court heard the case related to the opening of the BDP office in Siirt in July 2010. Siirt Mayor Selim Sadak had held a speech in Kurdish. Besides him Selahatin Cengiz, executive of the DTP in the Province, Mehmet Naci Özer, staff of Siirt Mesopotamian Culture Centre and Elif Uludağ, member of the peace group from Mahmur camp were on trial and sentenced to six months' imprisonment each for having violated the Law on Political Parties. The sentence of Selim Sadak was commuted to a fine of 3000 TL and the sentences of the other defendants were suspended (Radikal, 16 August).

On 17 August 2011 Muğla Penal Court 1 heard the case of Pervin Oduncu, member of parliament of the closed DTP in connection with a speech she had held at a congress of her party in Muğla on 30 August 2009. The court sentenced her to one month's imprisonment for having praised a crime and criminal and six months' imprisonment for having violated the Law on Political Parties (ANF, 17 August).

On 17 August 2011 İstanbul Heavy Penal Court 11 decided that the lawyers of Abdullah Öcalan, Ergün Canan, Servet Demir, Cengiz Çiçek and Davut Uzunköprü on trial for having made propaganda for an illegal organization should be banned for one year from representing Abdullah Öcalan (ntvmsnbc.com, 17 August).

On 11 August 2011 Istanbul Heavy Penal Court 9 continued to hear the case of 35 defendants, 20 of them in pre-trial detention. They had been detained after an attack on a flat in İstanbul, Kadıköy district, Bostancı region on 27 April 2009 during which Orhan Yılmazkaya had been killed. They are charged with membership of the organization Revolutionary Headquarters (Devrimci Karargâh).
At the hearing the defendants stated that it was impossible to be on trial with former police chief Hanefi Avcı and would not defend themselves for that reason. After the hearing of 12 August 2011 the imprisoned defendants Ergin Öncü, Kemal Hamzaoğlu, Günay Kubilay, Oğuzhan Kayserilioğlu, Rıdvan Turan, Ulaş Bayraktaroğlu, Ecevit Piroğlu and Özgür Cafer Kalafat were released and the hearing was adjourned to 17 November 2011 (ntvmsnbc.com, 12 August).

On 10 August 2011 the trial of 152 defendants, 104 in pre-trial detention and 19 on the run charged with membership and activities for Koma Ciwaken Kurdistan (Union of Kurdish Communities) KCK/TM (Turkey Assembly) continued.
In the hearing at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court 6 the prosecutor demanded to transfer the case to another town. The court adjourned the hearing to 25 August 2011 to evaluate the demand (ntvmsnbc.com, 10 August).

On 28 July 2011 the case against the members of the Socialist Democray Party (SDP) Baran Nayır and Ali Deniz Kılıç, who had been detained in Istanbul, Ümraniye district on 6 December 2009 with another seven people after a protest demonstration relating to the health condition of Abdullah Öcalan continued.
During the hearings at İstanbul Heavy Penal Court 10 it had turned out that the police officers who found the bag with Molotov cocktails had been different to the officers that signed the protocol. The police officers that were called to testify had stated that they did not carry out the detentions. Nevertheless only Baran Nayır and Ali Deniz Kılıç were not released.
During the fourth hearing on 29 July 2011 it turned out that the finger prints on the accusing evidence did not belong to the defendants. Yet the court had prolonged the pre-trial detention for the defendants on the grounds that the suspicion against the defendants of being member of an illegal organization continued. The hearing was adjourned to 20 December 2011 (Radikal, 22 August).
