(12/022) Excessive use of force by law enforcement officers…

Three people were beaten first by civil police officers then by a police team of Beyoğlu District Security Directorate in an open field on the grounds that they were drunk in Beyoğlu District of İstanbul Province on 30 November 2009. They made official complaints against the Beyoğlu District Security Directorate (DİHA, 2 December).

(12/023) Torture and ill-treatment in detention…

It is reported on 3 December 2009 that the surveillance cameras in Cumhuriyet Police Centre in Mersin Province recorded the incident in which Yılmaz Koç (28) and Ali Hıdır Koç (24) who had been detained on charges of “driving dangerously” and “having firearms without a licence” were beaten by police officers on 15 August 2009. The survivors had made an official complaint against the police officers with photographs that document the incident. Mersin Governorate Hüseyin Aksoy stated that the officers were removed from the office (Radikal, 3 December).

(12/024) Coercion in prison…

Lokman Laçin who was transferred from Erzurum H Type Closed Prison to Sincan Type Closed Prison No. 2 for his medical treatment, was beaten by the chief guardian on the grounds that he declined to stripped naked to be searched in the entrance of the prison. It is reported on 3 December 2009 that Lokman Laçin’s arm was fractured in the incident (Günlük, 3 December).

(12/025) Tried journalist…

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 6 went on hearing the case against the former editor publisher of Azadiya Welat Newspaper on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation” under Article 7/2 of Fighting with Terrorism Law on 2 December 2009. The court prolonged the pre-trial detention period of the defendant Vedat Kurşun and postponed the hearing to 18 February 2010 (bianet.org, 3 December).

(12/026) Raid on association building…

Police teams raided on Okmeydanı Democracy and Culture House in İstanbul Province in the night of 2 December 2009 and detained 19 people -12 of them were juveniles- on the grounds that they were “in preparation of action”. The teams broke the door of the office and used overpowering gas (atilim.org, 3 December).

(12/027) Incidents in the demonstrations to attract attention to the prison conditions of Abdullah Öcalan…

Several incidents took place in the 31st anniversary of the foundation of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKKKurdish Workers' Party ) (27 November 1978) and in the demonstrations to attract attention to the prison conditions of Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı F Type Closed Prison. Twelve out of the 33 people that had been detained in the demonstrations and in the home raids in Hakkâri Province was arrested on 3 December 2009 (ANF, 3 December). Four out of the five people who had been detained in Kocaeli Province on 1 December 2009 were arrested by Kocaeli Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on 3 December 2009 (Gündem, 3 December).
