(02/001) Coercion in prison…
Özgür Uygun (24) became paralysed after he had been thrown from the stairs by other prisoners in Isparta E Type Closed Prison on 14 June 2011. Soner Uygun (26), the brother of Özgür Uygun, has been in prison to serve his brother with special permission. The administration did not reply to the demand to release Özgür Uygun for his treatment reported on 31 January 2012 (Milliyet, 31 January).
(02/002) Ongoing KCKUnion of Communities in Kurdistan Case in Kars Province…
Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No. 2 went on hearing the case against 47 defendants -19 of them pre-trial detainees- on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation -KCK” under Article 314 of TPCTurkish Penal Code on 31 January 2012. Koma Ciwaken Kurdistan-Kurdistan Communities League /Assembly of Turkey (KCK/TMKCK Par lament Turkey ), the KCK is allegedly intended to organize the Kurdish people as an umbrella organization that includes Kurdistan Workers Party (PKKKurdish Workers' Party ).The court heard the demands of the both sides.
The hearing was adjourned for the preparation of the legal argument of the prosecutor on the essence of the case to 20 Mart 2012 (erzurumgazetesi.com.tr, 31 January).
(02/003) Tired people in connection with the Hopa incidents…
On 18 January 2012 Hopa Chief Public Prosecution Office had finalised the indictment against five defendants accepted by Hopa Penal Court of First Instance in connection with the incidents the incidents before the election meeting of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Hopa District of Artvin Province on 31 May 2011. This is the second case concerning the incidents.
The stones that were allegedly thrown by the defendants -Şinasi Gümüşkaya, Cengiz Akyüz, Şaban Kotil, İdris Akbıyık and Şafak Ustabaş- were evaluated as “weapons” and the prosecutor asked for the imprisonment of the defendants up to 12 years on charges of “opposing to the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations”, “resisting public officers” and “harming public goods”.
The first hearing was held in Hopa Penal Court of First Instance on 31 January 2012. The court adjudicated to merge the cases concerning the same incident and adjourned the hearing on 9 Nisan 2012 (Evrensel, 31 January).

Lawyers Mazlum Dinç, Mahmut Taşçı and Sinan Zincir were not allowed to visit their client Abdullah Öcalan on 31 January 2012 on grounds that the ship that would carry them to İmralı Island was out of order (ANF, 31 January).
(02/005) Detentions and arrests…
Ş.K. (33) and S.A. (29) were detained on charges of “being a member of an illegal organisation –Al Qaida” in Asarlık Municipality of Menemen District of İzmir Province on 31 January 2012 (Zaman, 31 January).
